As a follow up to an Asia Express article dated April 7,  Japanese NTT, joined by companies including NEC and Matsushita, has kick-started a year-long IP-based NGN (Next-Generation Network) field trial in December 2006. NTT has set up showrooms in Tokyo and Osaka to demonstrate its NGN services integrating the strengths of fiber-optic and IP telecommunications. NTT expects to start commercial operations of this US$25-billion network by 2008 and spend 1.8 trillion Yen (US$15.2 billion; US$1 = 118.4 Yen) establishing nationwide fiber-optic networks by 2010.
